bye bye kindeling

I cancelled my subscription to the newspaper today. We haven't been reading it and thought it would be a couple of extra bucks in my pocket.
It's funny how that when you do something like that, how offended the rep on the other end can get. "Why are you canceling?", "Would you like a weekend subscription only?".. Like what's it to you? .. can't you just let me cancel it without giving me 20 questions? Yeesh.

I found out the weekend subscription wasn't even a dollar less. Hmmm .. don't think so Charlie Brown.

20 some years ago

I have been going though some of my video tapes. I am debating to tossing them all, but before that I am going to go through them, keep the ones that have any "home movies" on them and start transfering some of the stuff on to DVD. The ZPZ show that I saw (see this date) got me to look through my old video tapes and find the old episodes of "Normal Life" that I have recorded.

- was watching some footage of Hema's 16th birthday party. Wow that's over 20 years ago already. Antique footage.

It was nice to sleep in a bit this morning. And I am happy I didn't go to that movie last night. Even though I know it will be fantastic.. but my day will come. No worries.

Dallas and I took the leftover stuff from the Garage Sale to VV today. We must have done ok though because after taking a van stuffed of just my stuff to his house, we didn't fill the van nearly as much with both his and my stuff.

That is the thing about Garage Sales.. at least with me. You end up likely spending more money, then what you sell. We bought a desk for Harley for his room, he just loves it. Now he wants a computer to put on it. Too bad I didn't think of that before I just got rid of the old motherboard at the garage sale, I could of had that setup for him to break ... darn.

Im a jerk.. But sometimes a guy just needs to sleep

My friend Figgy just called me to go see "District 9" with him for 10:30 tonight. Since I had quite a week of late nights the last week, I was planning on hitting the sack right after this blog post, so I turned it down. I am such a jerk.

I am sure it would have been a fine movie though. Sorry Figgy

We finished up the garage sale today and Leanne went to a farewell bbq from a Fabricland workmates. I tried to clean the house, but I got stuck transferring old Look People footage from video tape to DVD, while the kids watched Zathura for the umpteeth time. Man.. The Look People were good times.

mmmmmm ...Punjab

Man I love Indian food!...but It sure doesn't love me. Well .... I guess I should correct myself. It doesn't make me feel sick, it's just what is comin' out of my butt now is making the others around me sick.

Going to continue with our Garage sale now.. hopefully Dallas is not experiencing the same thing otherwise it's gonna be nuclear bumfare this afternoon.

who the hell wants it? .. do you want it? .. I dont want it .. who the hell wants it?

We are in the middle of doing a garage sale with Dallas and Lynnai. So far I think we have spent more then made, but the good thing is at least we are getting rid of a bunch of stuff out of the house that I haven't been using anyway.

- went and saw Wax Mannequin. This show introduced me to two new artists who I never heard before. Julia McDougall and Depravity Brown.
- Julia and her Piano caught me by total surprise. She had an incredible voice, I recommend everyone to check her out now.

Ahmad found a copy of 'we love Katamari' for Playstation 2 I am so excited to have a copy of the game finally. I somehow feel strangly complete with my game collection now because of it. Well.. that is if you don't include PS3. I would love to have Little Big Planet. But so far that is the only game that interests for that system, other than the obvious reason that its a blue-ray player. But I don't have enought time to enjoy the toys that I have now. So I am not going to go down that road and purchase one of those at this point of my life.

What has my sister done to him!!

Harley was rocking out to Bon Jovi in his bedroom and singing along to "It's my life" at the top of his lungs.. I am thinking of banning the radio from his bedroom.

One of the best nights of my life!!

No words can possibly explain the show that I saw last night. It is going to take a while to get over this one. The best show I have ever got to see in my life hands down. My heart was broken when Frank Zappa passed away at the end of '93. At first it was exciting to know that in years to come the Zappa Family trust would be putting out some new material because there is so much material stashed away in the vault, but I never expected to get to experience his music in a live form. There were a couple of times in the past where we saw 'Look People' do a version of 'We Are Not Alone' and that was great.. and then John put a tribute together with Regina artists like Jack Semple and Dan Siljer and it was good.. but to experience A full live show by his son playing with a band that has musicianship to the like of the original Zappa musicians back in the day, was something that was impossible to imagine. Of course I saw the ZPZ video when it was released and it was great, but I thought that was a one time thing.

The people that experienced the trip with me was Ahmad, John, Dallas and Tony. We had a blast both on the drive up and back. Maybe I can make a separate blog posting about some of the stuff that spewed out of our mouths, I will leave it up to one of the other guys to comment about those things if they desire. But here is a point form of some of the things that happened on the same day that was other than the show:
- tour of Tony's new house
- tour of CBC in Saskatoon
- The bike cop "getting out of the car"
- the toilet that almost sucked me back to the infinite beyond
- Ass Gravel Porch Box

Waiting outside in line felt like an eternity. We got inside and while I was enjoying a few moments of the security guard feeling me up, I noticed there were signs all over the place stating absolutely no cameras at all. This made me feel better about forgetting to take my camera with me (hindsight though .. taking pictures gets in the way of simply enjoying the moment). While others whaffled to the bar or to the merch booth, I said screw that and I went straight to the front of the stage and stood there. Since it was all standing room only and no seats, I wanted to make damn sure I got the best spot so I can see everything and not be disturbed by any people who may care to talk and drink more instead of enjoying the reason why they spent money to go into the bar in the first place.

So there I was, right in front of the middle of the stage, where soon, Dweezil is going to come out on stage, and I am going to feel like a young teenage boy having my first rock show experience.

They come out on stage and my heart felt like it skipped a beat, They start the show with "Apostrophe" and tears start wellin' up in my eyes. I am trying to keep it cool and enjoy the show, but they crack into "Village of the sun" and a couple of other classics from the Roxy shows that Zappa did in '73 and I loose it.

The show was simply amazing, the best thing I have every seen in my entire life. I could easily never go to another show again. Nothing can touch that show. There were others that came close, and there are artists like Look People, Wax Mannequin or the Rheostatics that will always be my favorite bands to see live. But this show simply blew anything I have witnessed out of the water. Of course a lot of it had to do with the fact that I came to terms with the thought of never seeing Zappa live.

Over halfway through the show, I summed up the courage to ask Dweezil if I could take pictures with my cell phone. Also in the process while I was sticking out my hand just to get his attention he gave me a good firm " Good Mornin-Ahmad style" hand shake and said "sure! go ahead"

He then said he wasn't ready for that one, and posed for another.

Throughout the show everyone in the band got a chance to show their skills and everyone's solos where spectacular.

Ben Thomas also did some great interpretive dancing for Black Page and Purple Lagoon. Hilarious stuff.

There where so many surprises for me during that show, I never expected them to do 'Willie The Pimp' and during the show, Dweezil brought up a kid on stage and taught him a bit of the solo. Good Stuff!

Dweezil gave the audience the choice of More Trouble Everyday, I'm The Slime and Peaches as options. I screamed my heart out for Peaches and I am happy that it did go that way. Other bucket of tears came though me as I was experiencing one of my fave Zappa tunes being played by Dweezil himself no more than a foot in front of me. It was awesome.

Dallas nabbed the set list from the stage at the end of the show and we noticed that they were originally planning going to end the show with 'More Trouble Everyday". As much as I enjoy that song as well, I am soo happy that they ended with Peaches En Regalia.

There were sooo many highlights in that show. It would have been nice to have a tape of it. But to sum it up somewhat, here is the set list:

Village Of The Sun
Echidna's Arf of You
Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?
Black Page (1)
Black Page 2
Bobby Brown Goes Down
Magic Fingers
Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy
Don't Eat The Yellow Snow
Wind Up Workin a Gas Station
San Ber'dino
Inca Roads
Broken Hearts Are For Assholes
Bamboozled By Love
Pound For A Brown (with band solos and improvs)
Zomby Woof

Encores (minus scheduled encore: More Trouble Everyday)
Purple Lagoon
Cosmik Debris
Willie The Pimp
Peaches En Regalia

We got to briefly meet Dweezil and other members of the band, they signed our Jersey's and Dweezil took a quick snap with John and I.

I was like I was a kid who got to meet Santa Claus.

The whole show was quite the emotional roller coaster for me that night. And was so filled of joy and happiness. The only days in my life that can top the emotional happiness that was felt on this evening are when my kids were born and the days I got engaged and married to my best friend.

I think what I enjoyed most about the show is that you can tell that everyone was enjoying what they were doing, having smiles on their faces and gave their best! .. I even heard that Joe Travers was sick at the end of the show but man .. with his playin' you couldn't tell. As a result we were not able to meet the vaultmeister himself at the end of the show.

I hope that Dweezil will come by here again in the future, and I would really like to see him perform some of his own material sometime.

So Dweezil, if you happen to be reading this, I would like to request that you perform "Shampoohorn" live. That would be be the bomb!

one more sleep

We are going to go see Zappa Plays Zappa tonight. I didn't get any sleep last night. All I could think about the show, what is the show going to be like? What Am I to expect? .. I am feeling sick to my stomach. Crossing my fingers that this show does not get cancelled.

Gran Torino

Finally saw Gran Torino. Not Bad .. but I think I let all of the hype get to me on the movie, And I guess I expected something more then what happened. It was missing something. The acting was kinda poopy too.. except for Eastwood. He always kicks ass. I am also indifferent about him singing the title track at the end of the movie.

Like Father, Like Daughter

Talya cut her lip open jumping off the bed in Harley's Room. She came out cryin like crazy and Harley's saying "I didn't even push her!! I didn't push her!!"

Leanne took her to the hospital. And instead of stitches (like back in my day) they glued her lip. That's bizarre. glue??

All I can say was really that she had it comin.. she was blessed with her daddie's klutziness and I am surprised she made it this far without any stitches.

She smacked her head good just last weekend on the floor in the mall when she toppled over the shopping cart using her head as a cushion and the shopping cart coming down on top of her.

Harley felt pretty bad and guilty, even though he didn't really do anything to her himself. But I don't thing it helped any when the nurse was pickin' on him sayin. "So ya punched yer sister eh?"
"No! No! I didn't" as he was getting all defensive.
The nurse said he was just buggin him and he felt a little better.

Kinda funny though.. he gets joshed like that all of the time from his dad. Maybe I gave him a complex now.

Harley, if you ever read this. I just want you to know. I'm sorry if I fucked you up. Love Dad.

Desert Island Disc

A while ago, I was talking about music with my buddy at work and the subject of the Rheostatics came up. He himself has never really been exposed to Rheostatics, so that made me think... Other then the obvious choice of owning Whale Music, I wondered if I would be able to make a "compilation" of my favorite tunes. It was really an impossible challenge in a way as I love everything that the Rheostatics have put out. So I wanted to see if I could limit myself to if I only had 1 CD of whatever Rheostatics material I wanted, what would I come up with. After putting in to thought over the past few weeks and then finally staying up though the night over last weekend to piece it together, I came up with a pretty decent compilation. (If I say so myself). In fact, I believe that Rheostatics should release it on or something as they don't really have a "compilation" of sorts. I thought I would share it with you all..

1. P.I.N - “Night of the Shooting Stars” (2001)
2. Claire
- “Introducing Happiness” (1994)
3. Aliens (Christmas 1988)
- “Melville” (1991)
4. Bad Time To Be Poor
- “The Blue Hysteria” (1996)
5. It’s Easy To Be With You
– “The Story of Harmelodia” (1999)
6. The Tarleks
- “2067” (2004)
7. “Northern Wish” –
“Music Inspired by the Group of 7” (1995)
8. Palomar –
“Whale Music” (1992)
9. Record Body Count -
“Melville” (1991)
10. Self Serve Gas Station –
“Whale Music” (1992)
11. Song of Flight –
“Music from the motion picture ‘Whale Music’” (1994)
12. King of The Past –
“Whale Music” (1992)
13. The Ballad of Wendel Clark pts.1 & 2 –
“Greatest Hits” (1987)
14. Henry’s Musical Beard –
“The Nightlines Sessions” (1998)
15. Little Bird, Little Bird -
“2067” (2004)
16. Home Again –
“The Story of Harmelodia” (1999)
17. All The Same Eyes - “
The Blue Hysteria” (1996)
18. Stolen Car (live) –
“Double Live” (1997)
19. One More Colour - “
Introducing Happiness” (1994)

20. Barenaked Ladies- Legal Age Life at The Variety Store (live in Regina) f
rom “Rheostatics Tribute: The Secret Sessions”

I have to say. I think it is pretty damn good. And I hope that all of you Rheostatics fans out there can appreciate it, and those of you who don't know who they are then I believe it is an excellent collection.

No I know there are A LOT of tracks that didn't make it.. But I had to limit myself to 1 CD. It could have very easily been a "box set" but then it would have just been me telling you to listen to the whole discography.

Thank you Rheostatics.

..and of you can't get enough of the Rheostatics and you want more, then I highly recommend that you check out the Rheostatics Live website. There are some great CBC radio performances on there.

no gamer here

Ahmad came over for a surprise visit. I realize that I enjoy playing video games but I will never be considered as a gamer.

For example, Ahmad kick my but at sword fighting the first time he played it tonight, and I have been playin it for a while already.

But that is alright. I enjoy playin games no matter how much I suck.

... well maybe except for mario kart.

bye bye long weekend.

Goodbye my long weekend, we had a good time together. I will miss you so. Perhaps we can get together again in a month or so?

It's now 10pm and my kids are still not in bed. We were out with our friends and their kids love playin with mine. They are like the best of friends. So my kids still have to come off of the high. They haven't been together for over a week, so they are going though withdrawal.

I better get on that right now.

Saturday, August 01, 2009

We took the kids to the exhibition today. Never again. Not on a Saturday anyway. Too many people and .. too much cigarette smoke. I like how you can't smoke at the majority of places now.. but it sure make you hate smoke more when you are around it. At first I couldn't care less. But now. I simply can't stand it.

I think next time I decide to take my kids on a Saturday to the ex, I'll get a hammer and bash it into the side of my head. .. well no .. it wasn't that bad truthfully. The kids were awesome and we had a great time... I am just beat from it right now.

Since it was the beginning of the month and I fell off the wagon of trying to watch what I eat... I thought I would see if I could somewhat start "fresh" .. well at least erase my data on the wiifit (because I dont want it to give me shit again) and start off fresh .. so I weighed myself (almost 229 lbs!! woopee!!) and did a first test to check my wii fit age. I got 25!! I thought that was so awesome that I decided to put the foot board away and award myself with a big bag of chips and my favorite dip!!
